FAMILY (REALLY) MATTERS
Your Grandparents Were Awesome
When was the last time you spent a day with your grandparents?
Have you ever sat around the dinner table and listened as they told stories? Have you ever wondered what it was like growing up back when they were kids?
You might be surprised at how cool they are, and how exciting their lives have been.
We're Missing Out On The Good Stuff
For thousands of years, humans around the world sat around campfires (or dinner tables), listening to the elders tell the ancient stories and pass on the wisdom of their people.
But in today’s jet set culture, most of us don’t even get to visit our grandparents, let alone learn from them.
And as a result, we are missing out on who we are and where we come from.
Do you have a family story that got away?
In November 2006, my Grandfather took all his funny stories and silly Grandpa jokes to Heaven. I missed capturing them, so my children and grandchildren will never get to hear them told the way only he could tell them, and it is one of the great regrets of my life. That is why I do this: so you don’t have to live with that regret.
Life Is Short. Don’t let the great family stories get away.
In 1956, Gordy was 6'4" and 200 pounds with movie-star good looks and a wicked fast ball. He got drafted right out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles. Sadly, his career was cut short by an elbow injury they couldn't fix in those days.
The next few years were difficult as he fought to establish his identity without sports. Over time, he built a successful sales career and raised three beautiful and intelligent daughters.
When I met Gordy, he was fighting liver cancer and didn't have long to live. For two hours, he shared the ups and downs of his career, but then he shared more deeply about his struggles with addiction, and the love of his wife.
When I shut off the camera, he leaned toward me and whispered, "Son, I've never told anyone those things."
We cut and assembled the footage as quickly as we could and presented the finished video. All the girls and their families gathered around Gordy in his wheelchair to celebrate his life together.
Three days later, he breathed his last. I think he finally had a chance to get some things off his chest. It was our sacred honor to give him the platform to do it.
Gordy’s family will always have this video to remember the funny, kind, sweet man he was.
